As any New Yorker will tell you, a cultural divide exists between uptown and downtown. If uptown is a suit, downtown is designer jeans. If uptown is a power dinner, downtown is an organic, locally-grown meal. Below is our happy hour downtown New York City edition of the best happy hours in Manhattan. In case you aren’t familiar with the term happy hour, these are hours in the day, normally from 4-6pm, when you can find special discounts on drinks. There’s a lot of ground to cover below 14th street, but these recommendations are a good start.
This Victorian-style den has hosted its fair share of celebrities over the years. Just walk inside and you’ll see why. The plush bordello-style furniture and lighting will make you want to drink and relax. The champagne cocktails and intimate seating is perfect for romantic occasions or dates. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the happy hour gives you 50% off all wine bottles. This may also help put you in the mood. The same deal runs on weekends from 5 to 7pm.
111 E 7th Street
As with other hotspots, this West Village bar and restaurant gets busier and busier as the night goes on. Early during the 3–6pm happy hour (Sun – Friday), however, the $4 drafts and half-price frozen margaritas ($4.25 house, $5.50 for flavors) are yours to enjoy in peace. Also consider the large menu of Southern-Texan comfort food. You can drink out front or head to the quieter back room inside. Check out the General Store for toys and souvenirs on the way out.
519 Hudson Street
Yucca Bar’s very popular happy hour downtown New York City runs from 1 to 8 pm, Monday to Friday. For $7, you can get a mojito, sangria, caipirinha or margarita. Also available is any beer they serve including what’s on tap goes for $4. Later in the day Yucca Bar can get pretty crowded. If you arrive early or are lucky enough to get a table, you can also order from a menu of Latin-influenced food. On Sunday tacos are half price, and on Tuesday tapas are half price until 8.
111 Avenue A
For Monday night happy hour, visit this romantic downtown New York City wine bar and enjoy bottles of wine over $40 at half off! Plates of French cheeses are available as well. Jadis is on the Lower East Side, and carries wines from smaller vineyards all over the world, with jazz music playing in the background, prepare to have a very relaxed time – at half off!
42 Rivington Street (Between Eldridge and Forsyth Sts)
Named after French poet Paul Verlaine, this Lower East Side standby offers fusion cocktails at bargain prices. From five to ten pm daily you can enjoy $5 happy hour Lychee Martinis, Sangria, “Vietnamese Bloody Mary”, and even House Red & White Wines and Basic Cocktails. Bottles of Yuengling are $3. On Sundays and Mondays, the same menu applies but for $4 instead of $5. A delicious assortment of Asian-themed bar food is always available.
